And in 1977 the ATM finally got its big break. Citibank, then the second-largest deposit bank in the United States, decided to make ATMs the subject of a large push: they spent a large sum installing the machines across its deposit branches. The New York Times reported it as “a $50 million gamble that the consumer can be wooed and won with electronic services.” But the response was tepid.
